In the month of March, we hosted the first edition of our health financing webinar series, “Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Health Financing: Navigating Budget Constraints in a Changing Global Landscape.”
We brought together thought leaders like Dr. Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq (SWAp Office), Dr. Gafar Alawode (DGI Consult), Dr. Agada Amade (NHI), and Dr. Raihanah Ibrahim (SCIDaR), and the insights were both educative and inspiring, a call to action.
A key bit that seemed to be missing from the conversations, however, was the local solutions to the national problem put forward. There was an appreciation of the fact that health financing reforms in the health system must be state-driven by the panelists. If state health systems remain underfunded, inefficient, and overlooked, PHCs will stay empty, frontline health workers will struggle to deliver basic health care needs, and millions of Nigerians will remain without care.
In an environment where donor funding continues to shrink and federal resources and allocations are stretched thin between tertiary, secondary, and primary care needs. The conversation is forging ahead to the battleground of implementation, which is at the subnational level.
Our second Health Financing Webinar Series “Fixing The Foundation: Rethinking State-Level Health Financing in Nigeria” is set to highlight the sub-national implementation issues and examples of successful adaptations of local health financing solutions.
This edition will deep dive into state-led health systems and seek answers to the tough but urgent question:
How can Nigeria’s states sustainably finance health in a time of growing need and shrinking resources?
We are bringing together state-level leaders, policymakers, and development experts to unpack:
— The current state of subnational health financing
— Innovative strategies states are using to stretch every naira
— Practical pathways to achieving UHC from the ground up
This is a bold conversation about building stronger, smarter, and more sustainable health systems where it matters most.
