SBCC-CHOICES Healthcare Worker Training Project, Ondo State

Background

Nigeria continues to bear one of the world’s highest burdens of maternal and newborn mortality, with many deaths resulting from preventable complications. Gaps in frontline clinical capacity remain a major barrier to quality emergency obstetric and newborn care. Through the FCDO-funded CHOICES Project, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) partnered with ACE Strategy & Consults to deliver Safer Birth Bundle of Care (SBBC) and Postpartum Family Planning (PPFP) training across Ondo State.

Our Approach

ACE used a structured four-phase model from initiation, pre-implementation, implementation, and post-implementation support. We combined stakeholder engagement, facility readiness assessments, and simulation-based, low-dose high-frequency (LDHF) training delivered through a hub-and-spoke model across four training clusters. To sustain impact, ACE also established simulation corners in facilities and supported state-led supervision and mentorship.

Our Impact

  • 112 healthcare workers trained (40 doctors and 72 nurses/midwives)
  • Across 26 health facilities in 17 Local Government Areas
  • 114% improvement in post-training clinical knowledge assessments
  • Simulation equipment (Neo Natalie, Mama Natalie, Mama Birthie) distributed to 22 facilities and 2 Colleges of Health for continued practice

This project reflects ACE’s ability to design and deliver simulation-based, low-dose high-frequency training that measurably shifts clinical competence and to build in the systems, equipment, and mentorship structures that make those gains stick well beyond the training room.
